The predominant colours in this phase are white and yellow.

The yellow background colour is divided horizontally by a white or yellowish, light stripe across the middle of the picture.
At the beginning of this phase the paintings are still painted with a brush. Later on the colour is applied to the canvas with a palette knife in several different layers as the structure of the painting becomes more important.
